The Burnie Arts Council is calling for entries to the 2018 Betta Milk Burnie Wearable Paper Art Competition paper on skin.
The Burnie Arts Council, in partnership with the Burnie Regional Art Gallery, are presenting this successful biennial competition for wearable art made from paper for a fourth time.
“Burnie Arts Council is very pleased to announce that paper on skin is, for the first time, open to Australian as well as international entrants.” said Pam Thorne, Secretary of the Burnie Arts Council.
“Every installment of paper on skin has raised the profile of the competition. We have for some time received enquiries from international artists who are interested and tempted by the particular challenge the competition offers. Therefore we thought it is now time to allow entries from all parts of the world.
“The total prize pool is valued at $7000 with the Betta Milk Major Award of $5000. The Friends of the Burnie Regional Gallery are sponsoring the Runner Up Award of $1500. We have attracted a new local sponsor, Cocoon Designs, which will support the Public Vote Award of $500. This makes it one of the richest wearable art prizes in Australia.
“The unique task for entrants is to combine skills in garment construction with that of handling paper. The art is judged on a number of criteria, including ‘wearability’. The judges make their final decision after seeing the garments when they are modelled on the cat walk at the gala event on Friday, 15 June 2018 at Burnie Regional Art Gallery.
“As in previous years, we have a judging panel made up of a trio of experts in art, craft and design. The judges this year are: Janet De Boer OAM, former Editor of Textile Fibre Forum, Niecy Brown, Arts Administrator, textile, paper & community artist and Jane Haley, CEO Ten Days on the Island.
