enex Perth public art commission

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are sought from innovative and experienced artists or artist teams working with visual or hybrid forms who are interested in delivering a site-responsive, integrated or suspended artwork for the enex Shopping Centre in the Perth CBD.

This commission is open to artists Australia-wide who are experienced in delivering technically sophisticated artworks.

Situated in the heart of Perth City, enex is a leading shopping precinct, with three levels of coveted, unexpected and compelling fashion, food and lifestyle retailers.

The proposed location would suit an appropriately designed suspended or integrated artwork/s. The artist or artist team commissioned to produce this artwork will be required to work closely with a certified structural engineer and relevant project stakeholders to achieve the integration and/or suspension of the artwork. Final location within the void space, fixing/suspension techniques, and methods of access to the artwork/s for maintenance should be taken into consideration. Conditions of access to, and costs associated with, the site will need to be considered in the budget for practicality and clarified with the relevant stakeholders.

Audiences to enex include retailers, customers and visitors; made up of families, office-workers, tourists, residents, and recreation users. Audience demographic will vary and be numerous dependent on the particular day of the week, but cross all age and cultural groups.

The proposed location will have high visitation and foot traffic, with customers and visitors passing through the Food Podium. The artwork/s should take into consideration the location as a meeting place, leisure area, and the transient nature of audiences to this area. Enticing audiences and enhancing visitor’s experience is a significant aspect of this project. Artist/s should consider how the artwork/s will be announced and how the work will add to the ambience of enex.

Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are invited from artists or artist teams working with visual or hybrid forms who are interested in delivering a site-responsive, integrated or suspended artwork for enex Perth.

Developing on from enex’s first ten years as Perth’s premier shopping precinct, JLL wishes to commission an iconic and destination artwork that signals their next chapter as Perth’s “home to style”. Artworks that reflect the sophisticated and contemporary ethos that characterise the enex Shopping Centre are encouraged.

The artwork/s should be of a significant scale and sensitively respond to, and enhance the existing interior and exterior architecture and artworks (see Appendix B). Artworks that include, utilise or imaginatively explore, organic forms, kinetic elements, fluidity, movement, change, colour and light are strongly encouraged.

Artists are also invited to explore the history and contemporary use of the site. Local and historical narratives, or Indigenous connections to the site, may be starting points for the artwork.

Within this broad conceptual framework, the particular direction adopted by the artist in this project is open to interpretation. A relationship to, and extension of, your existing artistic practice is encouraged. Overall the goal will be to create a dynamic and original artwork/s that are iconic, engaging, and innovative.
