Public art for a Park Picnic Table - Allison Park, Chiswick NSW (Expired)


Picnic and Play Table

The City of Canada Bay is seeking Expressions of Interest from artists for an artwork which will be applied onto a new picnic table in Allison Park.  The work should integrate one or more game boards into a wider artwork. This project seeks to build community connections to the park and is a trial pop-up picnic table.

 The Vision

The vision is for a fun game board (s) to be developed as part of table top artwork on a new picnic table in Chiswick.

The art is to be innovative, vibrant, have integrity and be of the highest quality. It is to connect with the local community and create a meaningful sense of place.

This project aims to achieve public art that resonates with local culture and encourages connection between play, sport, and the social lives of the residents nearby.

Potential Themes

The artist is encouraged to explore the theme of nature, waterways and a place of enjoyment and relaxation. 

Chiswick is a peninsula bounded by the Parramatta River. From Council surveys and workshops people related how much they loved Chiswick for its waterways, parks and natural environment.  The foreshore is a natural focus for walking, cycling, family outings and community events.

The work should reflect the vibrancy of children, young adults and families and multiculturalism found in this area as well as being complementary to the park surrounds.

The Brief: Site and Opportunities

You can choose which of the following board games to incorporate into your design:

  • Draughts/checkers/Chess
  • Backgammon
  • Snakes and ladders

The picnic table is a 2.3m long standard “billabong” picnic settings as per An undercoat of aqua acrylic timber primer will be provided on the table.  The artist should select a range of paints which work with the primer and have low or no toxicity given its public use.

Project Budget

The budget for this project is $2,000. The Project budget should include:

a)                  Artist Fee
b)                  Detailed design submission including written statement and drawings, provision of PDF files for Council records
c)                   Site visits as needed
d)                  Fabrication and Installation onsite
e)                  Risk Assessment and management of site during project, including provision of site safety plan for works and provision of public liability insurance information for artist and any sub-contractors.
f)                   Artist statement for signage and marketing material
g)                  Maintenance plan
h)                  Details provided regarding decommissioning process for artwork

Expression of Interest Submissions

Interested artists are invited to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI). Your submission should provide the following:

  • Images of previous public art & relevant projects completed (maximum 10 images)
  • Current curriculum vitae
  • Written description of proposed approach to this public artwork (maximum 250 words) or sketch/design
  • Project budget – detailing breakdown of allocations.
