Directing Masterclass: Daina Reid

About the Course

This intensive weekend practical course will focus on tools that every director should know in order to feel confident in directing TV series drama:

  • Breaking down a script

  • rehearsal techniques

  • Cinematic tools for scene impact & story pace

  • Working with actors

This course is designed for emerging directors, including theatre directors. The course delivery includes screenings and discussions of clips of some of Daina's productions, and a practical exercise working with professional actors in a rehearsal environment.


By the end of this course participants should be able to:

  • Understand the role and what is required of a director in pre-production, production and post-production

  • Break down a script

  • Work creatively and collaboratively with your cast

  • Work creatively and collaboratively with your crew

About the lecturer: Daina Reid
Daina Reid started her career in the film and television industry as a comedy writer and actor appearing alongside Eric Bana, Shaun Micallef and Rachel Griffiths before making the move behind the camera. Over the last decade, she has cemented her position as one of Australias most sought-after directors of premium event television. She has been a frequent collaborator with award-winning producer John Edwards on projects including Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo (Southern Star/ABC) the story of journalist and editor Ita Buttrose and emerging media mogul Kerry Packer ; and Howzat! Kerry Packer's War (Southern Star/Nine). After Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo, Daina directed the follow up Paper Giants: Magazine Wars.

Daina directed the mini-series Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS for the Seven Network and Shine Australia which premiered to over 2.8 million viewers. She also directed the two-part television mini-series adaptation of the award-winning historical novel The Secret River by Kate Grenville which premiered at Sydney Film Festival and screened on ABC1. Most recently Daina directed Sunshine for SBS which premiered at Series Mania in Melbourne. She is currently completing the six part series, Romper Stomper for Stan.

Daina’s other television credits include Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, The Dr. Blake Mysteries, Offspring, Rush, City Homicide and The Wrong Girl to name a few. She directed the children's drama series Nowhere Boys for Matchbox Pictures/NBCU and the children’s drama series Ready for This for the ABC. Her first feature film was I Love You Too, about a commitment-phobe and a new ager who buddy-up to win over the women of their respective dreams, and starred Yvonne Strahovski and Peter Dinklage.
