Carving a Wooden Coolamon with an Axe – with Mangkaja Artists

About the Course

Working directly with Nyikina artist Johnny Nargoodah you will acquire skills to hollow out and shape a wooden coolamon, a traditional carrying vessel used by Aboriginal groups across Australia. Using native wood sourced from around Fitzroy Crossing, artists Johnny Nargoodah, Wes Maselli and Trent Jansen will share the specific techniques required to make your own Kimberly coolamon.

All materials provided. Please note that participants will be required to use sharp hand axes.
