BLINDSIDE

PLAY Curator

BLINDSIDE invites proposals from emerging, mid-career and established curators to curate PLAY, BLINDSIDE's online exhibition space for screen based art, for a six-month exhibition series of 5 works. BLINDSIDE will accept proposals from local, interstate and international curators. The selected curator will receive a $200 fee to develop the series and a critical text as well as a budget to pay 5 artists $150 each for their contribution to the project.

In 2014, BLINDSIDE initiated PLAY, an online platform for presenting single channel video art. PLAY was conceived as a way to view short video works in their entirety, a way to provide an accessible space to enjoy video art. PLAY is now shown both online and in our gallery space on a television screen to provide multiple ways to view the work.

For the past few years, PLAY has been curated by a rotating list of artists and curators, some invited in as guest curators, and some from our committee of Artistic Directors.

In 2018, BLINDSIDE is opening the curation of PLAY up to a wider audience, with a national call for applications to curate PLAY for a six month period. We are seeking curators that can develop innovative, original and experimental engagements with screen-based art.

The selected curator will develop a program of screen-based art for PLAY from June to December 2018. The curator will be required to select five artists to present screen-based work in six-week exhibition slots. One artist will be shown every six months from June until December. The curator is required to develop a curatorial premise and organise the works around a selected theme. The curator will also be required to develop a critical essay as a companion to the work, which will be viewable online and in the gallery at BLINDSIDE. Each artist will receive an artist fee, and the curator will receive a curatorial fee. Please note that this project can be an international project as BLINDSIDE will pay fees to international artists if included in the project.

Applicants are required to submit a proposal which contains the following:

  • A 500 word curatorial rational
  • A considered list of potential artists (artists may be unconfirmed or confirmed)
  • Support material in the form of your CV, a writing sample and links to the proposed video work

The successful applicant will be supported with:

  • 5 x six-week exhibition slots of PLAY, equalling a six-month exhibition in the space and online
  • A curatorial fee of $200
  • Funding to provide a $150 fee to 5 artists
  • Promotional and marketing support

PLAY is supported by the City of Melbourne and the Victorian Government through Creative Victoria.

If you wish to discuss your proposal before applying please contact Martina Copley, Gallery Coordinator at info@BLINDSIDE.org.au
