Torres Strait shell carving translates to winning paper work

A young Torres Strait Islander has applied the traditions of carving pearl shell to produce a winning work on paper.

Twenty-six-year-old Torres Strait Islander Daniel O’Shane has won the $15,000 National Work on Paper Prize, sponsored by Beleura House & Garden. 

The judges were impressed by the way the work used intricate cutting, developed out of the pearl shell cutting techniques of Torres Strait art.
