The late Gulumbu Yunupingu and Kuninjku artist John Mawurndjul could be described as the royalty of bark painting. While the colonial-toned moniker is an odd fit, the sentiment only starts to capture the importance of these two artists.
‘They are both trail-blazers,’ said curator of TarraWarra Musuem of Art’s exhibition Earth and Sky, Hetti Perkins. ‘The works of these artists are very much a part of a contemporary dialogue.’
