Record breaker: a $3M Asian scroll tops Australian auction results

With an estimate below $10,000, a simple landscape broke Australian records on Wednesday night, selling in excess of $3M.

It was a great result for Bonhams Sydney on Wednesday night, with frenzied international bidding reaching fever pitch and pushing up a Chinese painting to break the $3 million mark.

A rare Chinese scroll by artist Fu Baoshi, simply titled Landscape (Lot 35), was sold for $3.17 million including buyer’s premium (IBP), off a pre-sale estimate of just $5000-$8000.
