As the train to Melbourne left Platform 1 at Central Station, an unlikely gathering of the Directors of three of Sydney’s leading cultural institutions formed.

Michael Brand of the Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), Lisa Havilah of Carriageworks and Elizabeth Ann Macgregor the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) announced they would be joining forces to present The National, a new biennial survey of contemporary Australian art.
