$1.2 million gift puts regional gallery on the map

Philanthropy targeted at building creative regions has led to one of Australia's most significant collections halfway between Sydney and Brisbane.

The New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) in Armidale NSW has received a donation of 11 artworks by leading Australian artists, confirming its position as one of the most significant art historical collections in regional Australia.

The donation from Canberra based land-owner and arts benefactor John Gale OBE was announced last week. Valued at over $1.2 million the gift includes paintings by Arthur Streeton, Rupert Bunny, Elioth Gruner, Adrian Feint, JJ Hilder, Hans Heysen, Herbert Badham, Harold Septimus Power and Desiderius Orban.
