Coleridge’s classic poem reads, ‘Water, water everywhere, and all the boards did shrink; Water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink’ (The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, 1798). Its tone of briny desperation has more currency than ever today as polar caps melt and islands such as Tuvalu and Kiribati in the Pacific are under threat of submersion as a result of climate change.
