Wet Feet | David Hirst

Wet Feet
David Hirst
11 – 22 July 2017

After a distinguished career as a Research Professor in Neuroscience at the University of Melbourne, in his retirement David Hirst has embarked on a painting career which is influenced by his travels and work as a research scientist.

Wet Feet is a commentary on the effects of climate change, specifically in the Pacific Ocean. As sea levels rise, many islands are being swamped. The ‘faces’ in this exhibition are based on David Hirst’s interpretation of traditional works of art from the Pacific, highlighting the little being done to preserve these cultures.

The success of Hirst’s career as a research scientist was spurred on by his active, hands-on experimental work, and this approach is clearly evident in his approach to art-making which demonstrates a vibrant and dynamic quality.
