Great cities and communities have one thing in common, they recognise the value of art in public places. Public art can contribute to the transformation of the urban landscape. It can celebrate and commemorate 'place' and provide a contemporary response to cultural and historical contexts, acting as a means for engaging with the community. It plays a vital role in engendering civic pride, as well as reflecting and recording the values and aspirations of a community.
As local landmarks, public art can appeal to visitors and residents alike, inviting fresh appreciation of place and helping to foster a sense of social inclusion. Today major cities across the world recognise the value of public art, not only as a marker of our cultural identity but also as a means to engage with people.
Council is currently in the process of developing the new Public Art Strategy 2017 - 2027. We need your input to continue developing Maribyrnong as a vibrant place to live, work and visit!
