Interlude welcomes you to the opening of our upcoming exhibition 'Plastic Realities', a solo show of abstract paintings, plastic paintings and sculptures by Cornelis Timmer.
Opening Night: Thursday 5th October 6-8pm
Closing Feast: Saturday 14th October 3-5pm
"Abstract art has been written about endlessly but when I recently came across an essay by Vered Aviv I realised that his text, as far as I was concerned, hit the nail on the head about my work. Aviv writes:‘Abstract art frees our brain from the dominance of reality, enabling it to flow within its inner states, create new emotional and cognitive associations, and activate brain-states that are otherwise harder to access (Front Hum Neurosci. 2014; 8: 85).
‘Plastic Realities’ showcases my development over the past 4 years or so. Within the work you will find traces of the ‘harmonic order’ pursued by the Dutch ‘De Stijl’ group, the emotional intensity of Mark Rothko and the ‘revolutionist’ in me through the Russian Avant Garde movement of the early 20th Century. I have taken therefore, the liberty to pay a tribute to some of these artists.
The show features 2 types of work; traditional oil/acrylic works and works executed in plastics. ‘Plastic’ as in ‘artificial or false’ seems to reflect the ‘Spirit of our Age’ in which ‘truth’ has become nothing more than a 5 letter word."
