Maroondah City Council is calling for local artists to submit photographic or digital artworks with the theme Celebrating local cultural vibrancy for display on signal boxes throughout Ringwood East and Croydon. The theme aims to raise awareness about the diversity of cultural activity in Maroondah, including (but not limited to) musical groups, theatre groups, street art, art spaces, crafting groups and visual art. The beautification of signal boxes within the Croydon and Ringwood East presents an opportunity for the Maroondah 2040 goal of creating “a vibrant and culturally rich atmosphere” and follows a successful 2019 signal box program in Ringwood on the theme of the ‘Anthropocene’.
The Maroondah Arts and Cultural Development Strategy 2020-2025 recognises the need to balance support and activity across all components of its local ecosystem, from grassroots creative participation through to innovative, contemporary and cutting-edge practice, from facility-based programming and precincts, through to small and informal activity at the neighbourhood level. This project endeavours to reflect the diversity of cultural activity within the municipality.
Maroondah City Council welcomes a diverse range of perspectives.
Photographic and/or digital proposals are invited from artists for an artwork to be printed as a vinyl wrap adhered to signal boxes and to be installed in mid July 2021. All printing and installation will be managed and paid for by Maroondah City Council and Urban Smart Projects.
This is an ideal opportunity for artists seeking to gain experience in the public art sector. Preference will be given to works that are site-specific and relate to the designated theme.
