Making Art Work proposes a radical reallocation of organisational resources to facilitate a large number of artist-driven projects. In the spirit of collective and community organisation, the project reinforces the value of artists, their labour, and their contribution to the broader community.
Across 2020 the IMA will commission artists to create artworks, texts, offsite and ephemeral projects, as well as embedding artists within the organisation to administratively realise these new commissions. The resulting artworks will be presented via an online platform, a publication, and our dedicated space for Queensland artists, IMA Belltower.
The IMA will commission ONE artist project from each category (5 commissions total):
—Artwork: an object or action stemming from your practice that conceptually engages with the project themes and can be exhibited.
—Audience Engagement: an activity that requires the participation or collaboration of a particular community to create an outcome. It might take the form of a workshop, participatory performance, community action, discussion, or live program.
—IMA Belltower Projection: a video work suitable for projection on the façade of IMA Belltower (see additional notes below)
—Publication: a text or image work that conceptually engages with the MAW themes that can be published online and in the forthcoming publication
—Any of the above forms from a First Nations artist or collective
