Stepping off a cliff: starting your first novel

Queensland University of Technology - QUT

About the Course

An introductory course for first-time novelists to learn the elements of writing including: plot, structure and character development. Tutor Dr Lee McGowan also teaches you how to approach the project in order to finish it.

You have a great idea for a novel but you don't know where to start. Learn a range of techniques and methods to approach a novel-length project and help you negotiate the dangers in those fraught first steps.

Develop and practice your novel writing skills by taking a close look at the elements of successful novel writing. During the two days of the course, you will take part in informal, informative and engaging workshops. You will break down and practically consider beginnings, middles and endings and other elements of the novel, such as character development, plot and structure and settings and themes. You will exchange work with your classmates to read and discuss and receive feedback from the tutor.

By the end of the day of talks and workshops, you should end up with an outline for your first novel and a plan to help you finish it.
