Today, the Mosman Art Gallery has unveiled a very special gift by the artist John Olsen. Titled The Rolling Sean and that Streeton Painting (2014), the work is inspired by, and in direct response to, Arthur Streeton’s painting Sydney Harbour (1895), which was gift to the gallery in 2012 as part of the Balnaves Gift.
The 87-year old Olsen had seen Streeton’s iconic landscape on an invitation to the Balnaves launch, inspiring him to paint the most recent gift to Mosman, ultimately connecting the two landscapists through their artistic vision and place inside the gallery.
