Persistence pays off for Whiteley Scholarship recipient

Gutsy abstracts by a Newcastle painter take out the 2014 Brett Whiteley Travelling Scholarship, winning $25,000.

Newcastle (NSW) artist James Drinkwater was today announced as the winner of the 2014 Brett Whiteley Travelling Scholarship, after four consecutive years as a finalist, including twice being highly commended. Turning 30 this year, this was his last year of qualifying for entry.

Drinkwater said on accepting the scholarship: ‘Each year I was included was an indication I was on the right track. Not once was I disheartened by the judges’ decision, and not once did I believe that they had made the wrong choice.
