Detail of R. Ian Lloyd’s portrait of Richard Larter (2004); collection of the National Portrait Gallery
Best known for his erotic pop portraits and psychedelic abstractions, Richard Larter died at his Canberra home on Friday 25 July.
The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) described his paintings as ‘provocative and dazzling, and at other times evocative and lyrical – but never dull’, on the occasion of the gallery’s 2008 retrospective of Larter’s work; which gave the artist due recognition as a leading figure within Australian art.
