Scholarship is the real treasure that bonds museums

AGSA exhibition Treasure Ships doesn’t have a single ship in it, but it does make us rethink the history of appropriation and the role of scholarship in museums.

Global trade is not a new concept; image supplied

There are many stories running through this exhibition, the most obvious being one of trade. Treasure Ships: Art in the Age of Spice maps an exotic history of exchange from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries – a period known as the Age of Spices.

Oganised by the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), in partnership with the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Director Nick Mitzevich described it as a ‘landmark exhibition.’
